Volunteer Week
This year’s national volunteer week runs from 1 – 7 June. The campaign was established in 1984 by Volunteering England as a time to say thank you for the work of volunteers who support a range of projects across the UK. Bromley EBP would like to take this opportunity to recognise the invaluable contribution made by volunteers from the local community who help us support young people in Bromley. Our volunteer Mentors provide a young person with the benefit of their life experience by meeting with them regularly and developing a relationship on a 1:1 basis. B...

Dragons help enterprising students at Ravens Wood
16 representatives from the local business world acted as ‘Dragons’ at the Dragons Pen event delivered at Ravens Wood School on Thursday 10th May. Over 240 Year 9 students worked in teams of 6 using their planning, team working and creativity skills to design a soft drink product for a target audience. Each group produced a business plan and marketing campaign as part of a ‘pitch’ to the business volunteers (the Dragons) who then chose the winning team. The young people learned the importance of planning with regard to starting a new venture and also how to overcome some of the barriers. It was great to work alongside representatives from Direct Line Group, Bromley and Link Asset Services, Beck...

Councillors say YES to YES!
The Bromley Youth Employment Scheme has been helping to tackle local youth unemployment since 2014 and has had some very positive outcomes for young people. The main achievement was to support over 130 NEET young people into confirmed employment which was sustained for at least six months. BEBP also provided valuable employability support for young people who are Looked After by the Council in the form of work experience placements in local and national organisations. We are delighted that, due to the success, Council Members agreed on 6th December 2017 to continue funding the project for 2018. They were keen that there was still a key focus on supporting the Borough’s most vulnerable young residents.

Employers support students with their Next Steps
Over the academic year 2017/18, Bromley EBP has delivered a series of employability events for young people in partnership with our local and national employers. Over 350 young people from local sixth form, who have indicated they do not intend to go onto University when they finish their studies, attended the sessions. The aim of each event was to expose young people to a range of employers who were able to help them improve their employability skills and their transition to the workplace when they finish school. Each event had a bespoke programme offering the students key note speakers and inter-active speed networking sessions. There was also the opportunity for the young people to have a 1:1 mock interview with an experienced interviewer. We were lucky to have the support of employers from a range of sectors as well as community volunteers – many of who...

Young People Graduate at Career Ready Celebration
Bromley EBP supports the Career Ready programme for young people at LSEC - Orpington campus. We have involved some of our employer representatives in supporting Masterclasses around employability skills to help them access internships, apprenticeships or employment. The young people are also assigned mentors from major local and national businesses to help them understand more about the world of work. This year’s Graduation event was hosted by Clifford Chance and took place in Canary Wharf, London on Friday 23rd March. 160 young people from across a number of South London Colleges graduated from the programme and collected their award at the event. We were delighted to hear how some of the students had gained confidence in public speaking and clearly grown from strength to strength from the support through Career Ready. The programme has been inva...
